February Birthstone

Those born in the month of February, a month of cupids and valentines, are blessed with a stone of clarity. Amethyst is derived from the Greek word "Amethystos" which means "not drunk." It was believed that this purple hued stone keeps the wearer quick witted.

With possible links to Cleopatra and Saint Valentine, the amethyst has a rich history of legend. It has been prized in many cultures, adorning crowns and even finding its way into ancient medicine. Early Egyptians placed Amethysts in the tombs of pharaohs, perhaps hoping its calming influence would dissuade grave robbers. During the Middle Ages, it was used as medicine to clarify a foggy mind and protect from sorcery. In Arabian mythology the stone is even linked to dispelling gout.

This semi-precious member of the quartz family has a variety of violet and red blends, with most of it coming today from Brazil and Zambia. The finest historically is said to be from Russia and is featured often in royal European jewelry.
