tips for buying an engagement ring

Buying an engagement ring for that special someone is one of the biggest purchases you will make. It can be very daunting if you don't go into it prepared. Whether you are just starting engagement ring shopping, or have been searching for a while, here is a list of things to remember.

1. Learn everything about diamonds. Many people start looking at engagement rings and they are completely clueless to the four c's of diamonds(cut, color, clarity and carat). Understanding the four c's can ensure that you know that you're not overpaying.

2. Plan a budget. Know what you are willing to pay and stick to it. You don't have to go into debt to purchase the ring of her dreams.

3. Custom Designing a ring is NOT more expensive. While buying an existing ring is great, custom design is the way to go to ensure you get the ring she really wants. It is a common myth that custom jewelry is more expensive, but it is no more expensive than picking something out of a showcase.

4. Pick a ring that matches her style(not yours). A lot of men come into a jewelry store thinking that they know their significant others taste, but just as you wouldn't pick a floral dress for someone who wears solid colors, you don't want to pick a ring that is flashy for someone who has more modest taste. There are endless options for ring settings, from a simple solitaire to something more contemporary.

5. Know what metal you want. Engagement rings are typically made from white gold, yellow gold, rose gold and platinum. Platinum is the most expensive option and resists tarnish. White gold rings are the most popular option, but does require occasional rhodium plating. Rose gold has a pinkish color to it and has become quite trendy.

6. Look at diamonds under different types of lighting. A lot of jewelry stores choose their lighting to best accent their diamonds, but their lighting is not always realistic. The facets in a diamond act like tiny mirrors, reflecting their surroundings, so it's important to see your diamond in different lighting situations.

7. Know her ring size. A good way to subtly figure out her ring size is to borrow a ring that she wears and trace the inner circle on a piece of paper.

8. Pick a trustworthy jeweler. Read reviews and find out what other people are saying about potential jewelers. Find someone that is willing to sit with you and explain the things that you are confused about.
